Cendol from Singapore? Sure or not!
By Huzraifah Atikah
Malaysia and Singapore is at war again. This time over the origin of cendol.
It all started when CNN Travel described the dessert as being from Singapore in their latest top 50 world's best desserts list.
This triggered an avalanche of responses from Malaysians in the social media with many of them correcting CNN and chiding it for being ignorant over the origin of the dessert.
This post pissed off many Malaysians.
One Twitter user said this was not like the movie 'Crazy Rich Asians'.
Another user also tweeted that Malaysians were not hungry to claim cendol as a Malaysian dessert but only to highlight it is not Singaporean.
An Indonesian twitted he also agreed that cendol was not from Singapore or Indonesia and that its from Malaysia.
These three countries share plenty of similarities in food and culture.
Over the past several years, such claims have been becoming common and social media wars have frequently taken place.
However, CNN listing cendol as Singaporean remains as of now.
