The Sarawak government has agreed to implement the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English for primary schools in the state starting Jan 2020.

The Education Ministry will assist the state government in terms of implementation and train teachers to teach the subjects in the English language.

“Teachers in Sarawak will be trained while initiatives have been carried out by the state government, the state education department and several universities in Sarawak to ensure that teachers receive overall training in the English language,” Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik had said previously.

Meanwhile, Sarawak State Minister of Education, Science, and Technological Research Datuk Seri Michael Manyin Jawong said the implementation would begin with Standard One students.

He said the state government had been conducting courses for over 400 teachers in the teaching of English for the mathematics and science subjects this year.

“A total of 1,265 primary schools throughout the state will start using English for Maths and Science, and a total of 2,657 of teachers need to be trained by next year.

“This is a programme which is very similar to the Dual Language Programme (DLP) that has been done before,” he said.

Manyin said the idea to implement this programme was to make the children more competitive and confident to speak up and express themselves in English.

Thus far, he said, only Chinese schools will not be using English in teaching the two subjects and will continue using Mandarin as the medium of instruction.

“The ministry respects their decision and they have the right to choose,” he added.
