Survival tips on how to escape from a sinking car

By Syafiqah Azman

The crash at the Penang Bridge recently that saw a SUV going over the bridge railing, has spawned many ideas on how to escape from a sinking car.

Although it may be hard for one to react fast in such a situation, you should at least know what are the steps to be taken.

Here’s what you need to do -

First of all, do not panic. As cliché as it may sound, do not panic! It is important as you need to think clearly in order to execute the next step fast.

Secondly, do not try to open the door. Why you may ask? It is because the water pressure makes it extremely hard to do so. Even if you managed to open the door, you will only allow more water to come in and make your car sink faster.

So, what you need to do is unbuckle your seat belt and quickly roll down your side window. But if you a little bit slow, it might be slightly hard to roll down the window as the water pressure could pin the windows and shut it. If its power windows, the car's electrical system should still work for a few minutes.

If still unable to get out, don’t worry. The next option is to break the window! Do not even try to break the front windshield as it is built to resist impact. Break your side window with your foot or sharp objects.

Now you might think, where can you get any sharp objects in that kind of situation? You can remove the headrest from your seat and knock it where the window meets the door. Besides that, you can prepare yourself now and buy a glass breaking tool like Resqme and put it somewhere that is easily reachable.

Lastly, after you break the window, immediately take a deep breath of air and swim out through the rushing water towards safety.

It is important for you to prepare yourself for this kind of unfortunate events or incident. Remember these steps as it will become handy for you in the future.
